Are younger generations going to a place where everybody knows their name?
If you count ‘home’, then yes!
A study says the bar scene is really taking a hit these last few years. Bars and clubs are built off the partying of younger generations, but when those younger people don’t want to go out, what happens?
Millennials have long been blamed for killing every industry under the sun. When you consider that a lot of Gen Z entered legal drinking age during the pandemic, it’s no wonder they prefer drinking wine at home instead of spending way more money during a night out.
When you enjoy an adult beverage, are you doing it at home these days? Do you still prefer to go out? Will the bar scene ever truly recover? I know just who to call to save all of these struggling bars.
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – The history behind Milton’s McPhedran Point and Suitor Court
Every week, we speak with Milton Historical Society President John Challinor. He shares the details behind local street names. Who/what the namesake is/was – that kind of thing. This week, we covered two streets named after local pioneering families. We’ll have two more streets next week!
Daily WTF – Send Your Ex To The Scrap Heap This Valentine’s Day
With just eight days until the most romantic day of the year, you might be feeling the love. You also might be feeling the opposite of love, especially if you’ve recently gone through a break-up. Many businesses and organizations are offering people ways to get that hatred out, whether it’s naming cockroaches after your ex, naming feral cats about to get neutered after your ex, and donating to have your ex’s name in a litter box at an animal shelter. The latest one to make headlines: Send your ex to the scrap heap! A company that specializes scrapping old cars is hoping people will donate money to have their ex’s name spray painted on the side of a car. Said car will then be crushed by a machine that I can only assume is named Truckasaurus.
Daily Did You Know – The Trews, Tegan and Sara, and more highlight jampacked schedule at local arts centre
There are a bunch of shows still to come for the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton. You can check out a ‘spicy’ guitar performance by Johannes Linstead this month! Families are also invited to see an educational dinosaur show, with life-like dinosaurs. If you want more music, they have The Trews, Tegan and Sara, and a Fleetwood Mac cover band all coming soon. And really, that’s just cracking the surface. The 2023-2024 season is still going strong, and that means there are more opportunities for you to have a great night out in Milton.
King Charles announces cancer diagnosis
One of the big stories of Monday was that Buckingham Palace has announced that the newly crowned king, King Charles, has been diagnosed with “a form of cancer.” He’s reportedly undergoing regular treatments, which will affect his public duties. People around the world have since offered their condolences, and wish him a speedy recovery!
Why fans think Taylor Swift snubbed Céline Dion at the 2024 Grammys
The Grammys are still on a lot of people’s minds, mainly because Taylor Swift rules the headlines. So, Swift won the ‘Best Album’ award for a record 4th time. Presenting the award to Swift was Celine Dion, who was there as a surprise appearance. When accepting the award, Swift was hugging people on the stage before receiving it, and seemingly ignored Dion in the process. The whole ordeal has since blown up and people believe that Swift intentionally snubbed Dion. People have called her disrespectful. Here’s the video – you tell me what you see. That looks to me like someone who is caught up in the moment. Thing is, they saw each other backstage and took photos together, so clearly Dion wasn’t offended by the moment. Anyway, Swift also announced a new album at the Grammys… so there’s that! ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ is coming out April 19th. Can’t wait!
Disney trips have become so overwhelming that tourists are paying for classes on how to plan them
It used to be a right of passage for young families: you take the kids to DisneyLand/World and they get to experience the magic! Nowadays, you almost have to take out a loan to take the family to a Disney theme park. They’re massive, crowded, and expensive. It’s the stuff of nightmares now for young families. To help deal with the stress of planning a Disney trip, people have opted to take classes. You can buy a Zoom class for $39. There’s a 200-page “Mom’s Guide to Disney World” for $40. Even Disney offers a service (Genie+) that can help people plan their trips. Experts say the reason for this kind of service boils down to people being unprepared for the experience. The more you know, the more you’ll be prepared for when something goes awry… and something always goes awry in the House of Mouse.
How to Watch Puppy Bowl 2024
With the Super Bowl just five days away, many people are getting excited for the big game. There’s a new factor this to keep the non-football fans excited: Taylor Swift. If 100+ men in pads running into each other is not your thing whatsoever, you can check out the PUPPY BOWL! Held every year, the event features more than 130 puppies, all rescued from across the United States, as they play on a small field together. With it being the 20th anniversary, they’re claiming it to be the “puppiest” Puppy Bowl of all time. It’ll be broadcast on cable and streamed online before the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 11th. Go sports!
Toronto has a pigeon problem. The city hopes birth control is part of the answer
In Toronto and around the GTA, even in Milton, there are A LOT of pigeons. Like, so many pigeons. It’s gotten so crazy that the City of Toronto is resorting to strange and unique methods to control the local pigeon population. They’ve decided to launch a pilot project that will see them use bird feed containing birth control. The goal is to stabilize the pigeon population before it reaches the point of no return. Could pigeons take over the world? It sounds like the answer ISN’T “no”…
Gen Z and millennials are going to bed much earlier — and sleeping longer
Not only are younger generations not going to bars anymore, but they’re getting a good night’s sleep? Monsters! A study diving into sleeping patterns found that Gen Z and Millennials are deciding that sleep is more important than staying up. They’re going to bed earlier, and they’re staying asleep longer. The reason? The culture. Adults in their 20s are finding it much more socially acceptable to go to bed earlier than we all did in the 2010s and earlier. With less pressure to go out, there’s more reason to get a good night’s rest. Also, it’s expensive to go out and it costs nothing to fall asleep. That alone sounds like a good enough reason…
