February is officially Black History Month in Milton.
The proclamation was held at Town Hall by Milton Mayor Gord Krantz.
“We’re celebrating the many achievements & contributions Black Canadians have made to help shape our nation,” says the Town of Milton in a post online.
Mayor Krantz encourages residents to learn more about the significance of Black History Month.
Locally, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) are holding events and presentations throughout the months for schools.
“Black History Month is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the lived experiences of Black Canadians yet the celebration of these lived experiences goes much deeper and is more profound than a month,” says Jennie Petko, Superintendent of Education for the HDSB with responsibility for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion, Indigenous Rights and Education. “There is a shared responsibility and determination that the recognition and acknowledgements of Black Canadians is, and continues to be, woven into the everyday learning in classrooms across the Halton District School Board.”
The Milton Public Library has issued a list of book recommendations for visitors to check out. They call Black History Month a “time for us to celebrate the diversity, history, and richness of Black culture.” See the list here.
