November is Women Abuse Prevention Month, and Halton Women’s Place is continuing to build awareness.
On Tuesday, November 7th, a purple bench was unveiled in Oakville. This is the town’s first purple bench. It’s a part of the ‘The Barb’s Bench Project’, which began in Nova Scotia to honour Barbara Baillie, who was killed by her husband in 1990. Learn more about Barb’s story here.
Halton is no stranger to these purple benches. In 2021, a bench was placed at at Dominion Gardens Park in Georgetown. It’s dedicated to the memory of Darian Henderson-Bellman, a former Georgetown resident who was killed in a domestic assault case.
Halton Women’s Place says other communities in the region will soon get a bench of their own, including Milton.
Today we launched the 1st purple bench in Oakville with our partners @haltonregionalpolice and @townofoakville. To learn more about Barb’s Benches https://t.co/US2KAKnamF
