If you’re about to have a baby or you’re planning to have a baby, you’re probably wondering what baby names are in at the moment.
Statistics Canada released their list of the most popular baby names of 2022. It takes a long time to process and syphon through the data, so these lists tend to come out late in the following year.
Noah was the top baby boy name in the country. This is the second year in a row for Noah in the top spot. It’s also been in the top ten list for 18 straight years. The full top ten list is:
- Noah
- Liam
- William
- Leo
- Theodore
- Oliver
- Benjamin
- Thomas
- Lucas
- Jack
On the girls’ side, Olivia was the top name once again. That’s now seven years in a row for the name. Since 2003, the top girl name in Canada has either been Olivia or Emma. Here’s the full top ten:
- Olivia
- Emma
- Charlotte
- Amelia
- Sophia
- Chloe
- Mia
- Ava
- Lily
- Mila
The latest information also includes the fastest risers for both boys and girls. Leon jumped the most spots on the boys’ side, going from 118th in 2021 to 86th in 2022. For girls, the biggest climber was Wren, going from 114th to 83rd.
If the lists make it seem like traditional names are more in, and unique/modern names are out, that’s not true! 86% of the baby names registered in 2022 were considered unique/rare. The issue is: those names are unique for a reason. Families wanting simple names are more likely to go with traditional names, which leads to these lists.
With the rise in population in Canada over the years, there’s also been a 31% increase in the number of baby names in the last 30 years, from 33,940 in 1992 to 44,545 in 2022.
Any of these names catch your eye? Let us know if your baby’s name made the list!
