With intimate partner violence being declared an epidemic by Halton Region, Halton Women’s Place is putting an emphasis on their Neighbours, Friends and Family (NFF) Program. Manager of Community Engagement and Events Jerusha Mack explains what people can expect with the ongoing campaign.
While the program has been available in the past, the women’s shelter recently received a grant. This allowed them to have an educator designated for the program, making it more readily available to residents.
Mack says they wanted the grant to enhance the program after going through some concerning numbers regarding Milton and Halton Hills (North Halton).

Mack says they have non-profit pricing for applicable organizations and charities. She adds that the money goes toward the program and ensuring they can continue to run it in the future.
A lot of people are uninformed regarding the severity of intimate partner violence in the community. Mack says that studies have shown 1/3 women will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime. Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) received more than 3,500 calls for intimate partner violence in 2022 alone. The goal of the NFF program is to prevent domestic violence through education. The workshop is created to provide neighbours, friends, and families with information and tools so they can safely intervene and support someone in need.
Halton Women’s Place has two shelters – one in Milton and Burlington. If you are in crisis and require support, or are looking for help to support someone, call their crisis line to be connected to a Crisis Intervention Counsellor who will offer support, counselling, safety planning, information and resources over the phone or at their shelters.
