A decision has been made regarding an anti-weapon used by the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) on an Oakville man.
Back on Thursday, July 13th, officers attended a residence on MacDonald Road in Oakville after the 22-year-old man’s family called 911 worried about his welfare.
Police arrived, and the man barricaded himself inside the residence. Attempts to communicate with the man were made, and officers set up containment around the home as the man was in possession of weapons.
The following morning, officers smashed a window and an officer discharged his Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield (ARWEN) at the man multiple times. The man was eventually taken into custody.
This case was then taken on by Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the use of his ARWEN.
The case has been closed.

Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit has been called in after a 22-year-old Oakville man was hit by a “less-lethal” weapon.
The information provided says that at roughly midnight on Friday, July 14th, officers were called to a residence on MacDonald Road in relation to a dispute. With officers on scene, the man barricaded himself in the residence. There was an interaction, and one officer discharged an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) at the man. He was taken to hospital for assessment. The man was not seriously injured. One subject official and seven witness officials have been designated at this time.
While the man did not sustain any serious injury, the SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged an ARWEN, which is classified as a firearm. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, a firearm is defined as a barreled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online here.
