A recent survey has revealed the cost of living is having a dramatic impact on residents being able to afford basic healthy food.
The annual Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s Nutritious Food Basket survey shows there is little to no money left over for non-negotiable living expenses
like utilities or transportation once groceries are purchased.
For many individuals and families living with lower incomes, the cost of healthy food and rent uses most of their income, and in some cases, all or more.
A family of four with one full-time earner, is spending 66 percent of their income on food and rent.
While a single adult, is spending 161 percent.
The Health Unit indicates the effects of food insecurity on the mental and physical health of residents places a substantial burden on the health-care system, resulting in increased costs
that impact everyone.
