Police across Canada are launching a fraud prevention campaign (feb6-10).
The aim is to raise awareness about the significant increase in the grandparent scams targeting seniors.
The joint program between the OPP, the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre and the RCMP say fraud reports totaled $530-million in losses last year (2022).
Ontario was the hardest hit province, due to population…with reported losses of $5.4-million.
It’s estimated that only 5-10 percent of victims actually report scams, because of embarrassment.
Police say anyone who calls, especially in the middle of the night on a landline, or who asks that you to make a bail payment with gift cards or crypto currency should raise a red flag.
If the request is for a cash withdrawal and an offer to send a courier to pick up said cash, this too is a scam and police should be notified.
