The Milton Film Festival will celebrate its 10th year with a big lineup this month!
Local film fanatics can attend the annual festival that will run from Friday, January 27th – Sunday, January 29th. The list of movies this year include:
- I Like Movies
- Socially inept 17-year-old cinephile Lawrence Kweller gets a job at a video store, where he forms a complicated friendship with his older female manager.
- Drinkwater
- A coming-of-age story in the John Hughes tradition. Mike Drinkwater is lost. His father, Hank, is hardly the role model Mike deserves. A young woman moves to town, and their friendship gives them the courage to overcome their challenges.
- The Long Rider
- When Filipe Leite leaves his adoptive home of Canada, the aspiring journalist sets out on an epic quest to ride from Calgary to his family’s home in Brazil – and later beyond – entirely on horseback. | Jorge Escompani is a “Shiringa” master, “Shiringa” is a tree which produces natural latex. This is considered a tradition that preserves great passion and environmental awareness.
- The Swearing Jar
- “It is a rare and miraculous thing to find your one true soul mate.” Carey soon learns that finding two of them can pose an even greater problem. | A man who is travelling on a train finds it’s difficult to take pictures of the view, so he comes up with a unique solution.
- Aftersun
- 11-year-old Sophie takes a summer vacation to Turkey with her loving and idealistic father, Calum. Twenty years later, she reminisces about the experience and reflects on their relationship – and the parts of him she wasn’t able to know. | When two post-grad best-friends reunite, bitter truths emerge threatening to tear their friendship apart.
- Riceboy Sleeps
- A South Korean mother and son struggle with their new life in 1990s Canada and the growing rift between them, in Anthony Shim’s assured second feature. | Inspired by true events, an imaginative Asian-Canadian girl attempts to fold a thousand cranes as she learns to lose her father during his final days in the hospice.
- EO
- Follows a donkey who encounters on his journeys good and bad people, experiences joy and pain, exploring a vision of modern Europe through his eyes. | As the spring thaw approaches in Saskatchewan, a young beekeeper struggles to maintain his bee colonies. | It comes at night.
- A Bunch of Amateurs
- A bunch of British working class amateur filmmakers with nothing left to lose, tackle one of Hollywood’s greatest musicals in order to save their beloved Club. | Documentary about an actor researching a character for an upcoming feature film that is inspired by Canadian wilderness painter Tom Thomson who died mysteriously in Algonquin Park in 1917.
All in-person screenings will be held at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton over the course of the weekend.
There will also be a virtual festival that will run from Wednesday, January 25th – Tuesday, January 31st. It will include a separate movie list, which can be viewed here. The movies shown virtually can be viewed on-demand.
