Milton Transit is looking into getting electric buses added to its fleet.
Along with 12 other transit agencies across Ontario, Milton Transit has partnered with Metrolinx and consulting firm HDR to begin a study on moving towards battery electric powered buses.
“This transit study will help create the pathway for us to deliver on green technology, while reducing energy consumption, pollution and carbon emissions from our fleet,” says Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz. “This is the type of leadership in sustainability we want residents to see, as we continue to create the Possibilities of a greener and more environmentally friendly Milton.”
Milton Transit will receive a report specific to the Town of Milton that looks at current and future plans, targets, polices, and financing to outline a transition toward electric buses and the required infrastructure.
Infrastructure Canada is funding 80% of the cost of the study through the Zero Emission Transit Fund. This is a grant that supports public transit electrification efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change impacts.
“Innovation and sustainability are key priorities for the town,” says Town of Milton Chief Administrative Officer Andrew Siltala. “We know electrification of transportation is crucial to meeting climate change goals and this study is just a first step for Milton Transit, as we continue our commitment to environmental stewardship through sustainability initiatives and mitigation of climate change impacts.”
The study is expected to be completed in 2023 and recommendations will be presented to Council for their consideration on next steps.
