How does a police officer’s shift work during the holidays?
That’s the latest question for our weekly ‘Ask a Cop’ segment. Halton Police Constable Ryan Anderson says officers are split into platoons. After that, it’s kind of just the luck of the draw for whoever works Christmas.
Constable Anderson adds that officers are able to book days off and take vacation time. That’s done by seniority, so the newer officers tend to work the big holidays. Many officers will work together to find a solution, so there will be situations when shifts are traded and switched to avoid using vacation time for certain things.
Interestingly enough, holiday pay doesn’t exist for officers. Each day is treated as the same to make it fair for all. Officers do get paid for overtime when they work more than 12-hours in a day, but Constable Anderson says that tends to be situational; whether it’s a case that’s taking longer to work or some sort of crisis that requires more officers on the scene.
He wants residents to know that there will always be an officer waiting to respond to your calls, even on Christmas morning.
‘Ask a Cop’ will return next week with more of your questions being answered. Reach out if you have any questions that you’d like answered by a local police officer.
