Have you ever wanted to be a part of a police academy?
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is currently running its Citizen Police Academy. It’s a free, eight-week program that residents can sign up to to learn more about police work.
With it being back in-person rather than virtual, HRPS Constable Ryan Anderson says they have been getting a lot of questions about the program. He runs down what residents can expect if they sign up.
There are some requirements to sign-up. To apply, you must be:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Work or reside in Halton region
- Pass a background security check
- Be able to attend all eight sessions
Constable Anderson says the current program sessions are underway, and therefore are full. He says the program had a 25 people limit before the pandemic, but that might be smaller now with capacity issues. He tells residents who are interested in attending to expect another round of sessions to be available in late-January, early-February – with registration opening up a few weeks before. He’s hoping that capacity won’t be an issue by that time.
While the program is a great opportunity for prospective officers, Constable Anderson believes that anyone who is interested in the behind-the-scenes aspect of the Halton Police should apply. He says past attendees have ranged in age, experience, and background.
