Environment Canada is warning of a potentially dangerous thunderstorm heading towards Milton.
It says that “Torrential rainfall possibly exceeding 50 mm… Isolated wind gusts to 90 km/h” is expected the afternoon or evening of Thursday, August 26th for Milton and the surrounding area.
Here’s more:
“Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. The main threat with these thunderstorms will be torrential rainfall that may lead to localized flooding, particularly in more urbanized areas and areas of poor drainage. Rainfall amounts of 50 mm or greater are possible within relatively short periods of time. In addition, some thunderstorms may produce wind gusts to 90 km/h.
“Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
“The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”
We’ll update you should anything change in that time.
