May is Community Living Month.
It’s a province-wide annual awareness campaign to promote true inclusion for people who have an intellectual disability and their families.
The month is also a great opportunity to support local organizations like Community Living North Halton.
The Social Media Marketing Coordinator for CLNH, Sheldon Samlall, provides a quick breakdown on what exactly they do for the community.
CLNH offers residential services, recreational program, programs for people with autism, job skill training, and much more.
Samlall and Community Living North Halton ran a social media contest recently to promote the month. This year’s theme is ‘Still in This Together’, which CLNH says is “in honour of the perseverance and resilience shown by those in our movement as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Samlall says the feedback from Milton residents has been fantastic as they work to grow their online presence in the area.
The Town of Milton also held a flag raising to promote Community Living Month. The flag at Town Hall (pictured at the top of the article) will be flown until Friday, May 21st.
Samlall says this month really means a lot for the organization, having been around since 1955.
He adds that this year has been hard on all fronts. He notes that all industries have been hit in various and that it’s been hard to see residents and business owners have to go through the pandemic. He’s looking forward to when things can open back up so that fundraisers can continue to be held in-person, allowing everyone to get together safely once again. That said, there is a silver living when reflecting on the year that was.
