Looking to a hold fire this summer? You’ll need a burn permit.
All open fires, including backyard chimineas and outdoor fireplaces, require a burn permit. The Town of Milton and the Milton Fire Department are reminding residents that you can actually get them online now. In fact, with the current COVID-19 restrictions, that’s the only place to get them.
The permits cost $50 and cover the whole calendar year.
Permits are available for three types of open air burning:
- Outdoor Fire Container permits cover chimineas and outdoor fireplaces
- Brush Fire permits are needed for larger fires that require more safety clearance
- Agricultural Land permits deal with burning fields for crop maintenance
Propane and natural gas fire pits do not require a burn permit.
Conducting open air burning without a permit could cost you a pretty penny. The Town of Milton says that if a Milton Fire Department truck is dispatched in response to a burning permit by-law violation, it’ll be roughly $575 per truck. That’s $525 more than the burn permit.
