The Parkinson SuperWalk campaign is kicking off here in Milton.
Beginning on Tuesday, May 4th, the event will be taking the virtual route. Last year was the inaugural year for the SuperWalk in Milton, but it was hampered by the beginning days of the pandemic.
Despite the last year causing some setbacks, coordinator Rob Hewlett says he’ll keep launching the event to support those with Parkinson’s Disease.
He admits that this year will be unique, and so he hasn’t set a goal for fundraising. Hewlett would like to raise $100,000, but his expectations are notably tempered with the pandemic and he feels that this year will be best served as an educational tool for residents.
The event will be ongoing throughout the spring and summer. It’s an event held in other communities, with last year being the first for Milton. Hewlett says he brought the event to our town to help those struggling.
His father had lived with Parkinson’s Disease, having now passed away roughly 13 years ago. Hewlett and his parents were heavily involved in the Burlington Superwalk event.
A friend of Hewlett’s, Kevin Farmer, held the Drumming for Parkinson’s event last year. It raised $10,000 for Parkinson’s research, and will be held again this summer. Farmer was even recognized with a National award, the SuperWalker of the Year.
While the event is called Parkinson SuperWalk, you can do it in whatever fashion you’d like. Whether that’s walking, running, biking, whatever! Hewlett says he’s a fan of cycling, so he will get out and move around that way.
At the time of the interview, Hewlett says he was still figuring out the online platforms. Until we get that information, you can send your support to the Parkinson Canada SuperWalk main page.
