The Halton Catholic District School Board has broken ground for another school in Milton.
On Friday morning, Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce joined Milton MPP Parm Gill and others at 675 Kennedy Circle West for the ceremony. The Government of Ontario had given the Halton Catholic District School Board approval for the $17.2 million elementary school in July 2020, along with the approval for a new $41.3 million Catholic #3 secondary school.
MPP Gill says he was happy to be a part of the ceremony.
“It’s an honour to celebrate the ground-breaking of the new #10 elementary school. Since elected in 2018, I have been proud to announce six new schools for our community totaling over $150 million from our government. This is in addition to the $18 million expansion of Bishop Reding and $3 million for St. Peter’s elementary school for a new, five room childcare centre.”
There have been six schools announced by the Ontario Government since 2018.
With the new school being built in Ward 3, both Regional Councillor Mike Cluett and Town Councillor Rick Di Lorenzo were on hand. Councillor Cluett says it’s great to be getting another school in the area.
He adds that he hopes Milton can continue building more schools as we continue to grow in population. Noting that a naming contest was held for the new public school being built on Bronte Street South, Councillor Cluett hopes the HCDSB can find a way to honour a local figure or aspect of Milton when naming the new school.
The Director of Education for the Halton Catholic District School Board, Pat Daly, says a school is more than just the structure being built.
“The establishment of a new school is always an exciting time from a school board’s perspective. We recognize that a school is more than just the bricks and mortar building where students gather to learn. [Friday]’s groundbreaking ceremony represents a very tangible first step towards the building of a new school community – where families and staff will come together to create and nurture a welcoming space in which all students can experience an engaging Catholic learning environment. We look forward to completing this new school and opening our doors to this vibrant new community.”
In a press release, MPP Gill says HCDSB Milton #10 Elementary School will have 671 classrooms, 88 new licensed childcare spaces, and five new childcare rooms.
