The Town of Milton is recognizing local crossing guards on Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.
In a release, the Town issued the following statement:
“Today is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day and the Town of Milton wants to recognize and sincerely thank all of our friendly and helpful school crossing guards for keeping our community safe.
“Crossing guards serve an important role in keeping school children safe on their active and daily travel to and from school. The community is encouraged to smile, wave and thank neighbourhood crossing guards when walking or biking before and after school today.
“Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is an excellent opportunity to remind residents about the rules to follow when a crossing guard is present.”
The Town of Milton also provided some rules for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to follow.
Rules for drivers
- Stop for school crossing guards with a lifted sign and their pedestrians;
- Wait until pedestrians and crossing guards are completely off the road before proceeding.
Rules for pedestrians and cyclists
- Wait for the crossing guard to lift the sign before assuming traffic will stop;
- Follow the crossing guard’s direction;
- As a cyclist or scooter rider approaching a crossing guard, you must walk your bike or scooter through the crossing;
- Proceed with caution and always check for drivers before crossing.
