The Town of Milton will no longer accept cash for property tax payments.
The change was made official at Milton’s Town Council meeting on Monday. A number of reasons for this shift are noted by the Town, including health and safety improvements, risk mitigation, process efficiency/modernization and other service enhancements.
Regional Councillor Colin Best says Milton isn’t the first municipality to do this.
The exact numbers for cash payments at the Town of Milton are actually 0.9% of all property tax payments in the year 2019, and only 0.4% in 2020. In the report, the Town says the drop last year was likely given to impacts from COVID-19.
The following methods of payment are accepted by the Town:
- cash payments through financial institutions and/or mortgage lenders;
- online through internet banking;
- Town managed pre-authorized payment plans;
- payments by way of cheque through the drop-box, mail or in-person drop off at
cashiers; - credit card online through a third party vendor and not affiliated with the Town; and
- in-person at Town Hall using debit or cash.
Last year, more than 39% of property tax payments for the Town of Milton were done using online banking. Pre-authorized payments (PTP) made up more than 25%. Another 19% of them were done through cheques.
