(The Magical Lights of Milton 2017)
It’s always nice to have a little bit of light during the darkest time of the year.
The Christmas lights show ‘The Magical Lights of Milton’ is held each year to raise money for the Milton District Hospital Foundation. This is its 11th year, and David Geall and his family have helped raise over $60,000.
Geall says they were worried that COVID-19 would impact the show.
Every year, Geall says it is their goal to raise $10,000. That hasn’t happened in one season just yet, but he’s hopeful that Miltonians will help them cross that threshold, and is happy with whatever amount they are able to raise. In an update, Geall says that they are keeping numbers private until the final date, but it has been a record year for the event. He adds that they have reached a new milestone in their grand total.
Geall says he first got into doing the lights show because he saw a few on TV and knew someone in Georgetown who does a similar act. He laughs because the technology that Geall puts into his show today did not exist five years ago, let alone when he began over ten years ago.
Something that will be different this year is that there wasn’t be a big opening night. Geall says they had to cancel their usual ‘Grand Opening’ because of COVID-19 concerns.
He says you will still be able to enjoy the show in the comfort of your own car, or as long as you maintain physical distancing on the street.
Geall adds that if you do attend, be mindful of the neighbourhood. He says that while his neighbours haven’t complained in the past, he still wants attendees to keep volumes at a reasonable level, stay off lawns, and be respectful to the people around them.
The Magical Lights of Milton runs from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. from Mondays to Wednesdays; until 11:00 p.m. from Thursdays to Sundays. The last show will be on Sunday, January 3rd.
You’ll be able to watch it at 876 Willow Avenue in Milton. When you’re not jamming out to 101.3 myFM, you can tune into the show at 99.7 FM. They will have a donation box near their signal sign.
If you’d like to donate, and you don’t carry cash around anymore, you can pay through an eTransfer. Geall says you can send the money to MagicalLightsOfMilton@gmail.com.
All of the money raised is donated to the MDHF, so make sure you check out the lights show this holiday season and give what you can to a good cause!
