Milton’s Home Hardware is the employer of a recipient of the Golden Hammer.
The award is presented to employees who have worked at Home Hardware for over 50 years.
In 2020, Bill Karn from Milton was one of six employees to receive the Golden Hammer Award at a virtual conference. He reportedly began his career in hardware in 1967 as a management trainee at Beaver Lumber in Oakville. He then became Assistant Manager before transferring to the Weston Road Beaver Lumber store in 1970. Two years later, Karn was promoted to Manager at Applewood Home Hardware in Mississauga.
In January 1986, Karn was recruited to open the brand-new Home Hardware Building Centre in Milton and worked there as Lumber Division Manager or 23 years. Since retiring from the position in December 2009, he has worked at the Lumber Desk on a part-time basis.
The President and CEO of Home Hardware Stores Limited, Kevin Macnab, says Karn has worked hard and is appreciated by the company as a whole.
“On behalf of everyone at Home Hardware Stores Limited, we want to thank Bill for 53 years of service in the hardware industry. We are proud to acknowledge his incredible accomplishments and truly appreciate his commitment and dedication to serving his local community.”
Milton Home Hardware Dealer-Owner, Jeff Seydel, says Karn is a valuable member of his team.
“For the past 53 years, Bill has been a valued member of the Home Hardware team. He always makes customers feel welcome, while providing exceptional service and quality advice.”
In a release from Home Hardware, it says the Karn has enjoyed working with customers over the years.
“Bill cherishes the funny memories and witty banter he has shared with customers over the years. One of his most memorable moments was the day he ordered a customer’s window after reiterating how important it was to have exact measurements. The order was placed and when it was received the customer was baffled as to why the window didn’t fit. Bill queried what measurements were used and the customer told him that she had her neighbour measure his window for her order, because she thought he had the same ‘model’ home that she had!”
