(Councillor Kristina Tesser Derksen, 2019)
Another year is coming to a close.
2020 wasn’t the best year, thanks to a pandemic. myFM News is speaking to local figures and organizations to recap the year and project how 2021 will play out.
Town Councillor Kristina Tesser Derksen says this year has taught her a lot of things.
She adds that we’ve been able note and improve on areas that we may have struggled in in the past. She’s happy with the overall way that we have weathered the pandemic.
Some positive stories that Tesser Derksen highlights include the Town passing its Climate Change Work Plan. She says it’s a big step towards fighting climate change. You can read more on that here. The Town also joined the Partners for Climate Protection, joining more than 140 municipalities across Canada to help mitigate Climate Change.
She wants to keep working on environmental issues in the New Year.
The Town of Milton also passed a unanimous budget for the first time in a long time. You can read more on that Town’s 2021 Budget here.
Councillor Tesser Derksen says that the pandemic has brought a lot of challenges. She points out a divide that has been formed over the last nine months where the people who traditionally had done well pre-pandemic have flourished in a post-COVID world – noting that the people who may have been struggling pre-pandemic have continued to struggle, if not worse. She says that is something that all levels of government need to work to address in order for us to truly be out of the pandemic.
Episode 28 of ‘This Week in Milton’ featured an interview with Councillor Tesser Derksen, in which she and myFM News covered the Milton Education Village Secondary Plan being approved, as well as Lighting Up Allendale and the Christmas break. Listen to the full interview here.
