More development is coming to Milton!
A number of presentations from developers were held at the most recent Town Council meeting. They centred around a new apartment building, an entire subdivision, and a townhouse development.
Starting with the apartment building – it’s being developed by Gulfbeck Development Inc.. According to the report, it is a six-storey, 103-unit apartment building with an underground parking garage. It is set for a spot of land just off of Whitlock Avenue, near Regional Road 25 in the south-end of town.
On the most recent ‘This Week in Milton‘, Regional Councillor for Ward 4, Zeeshan Hamid, refers to the units as starter homes. He says we need more of them in Milton.
One thing that the Town Councillor for Ward 4, Sameera Ali, was concerned about was the green space for the building. Apartment buildings have a tendency to fall into the ‘concrete jungle’ concept. She says that following the Council meeting, she was told that green space will be an improved aspect for the building.
For what it’s worth, the location for the apartment building is also within about a five-ten minute walk from the Milton Sports Centre and Community Fields.
Another development that was discussed at the most recent Town Council meeting was a subdivision planned for the area near James Snow Parkway and Fifth Line. It will even extend between Derry Road and Britannia Road. According to the report, it will consist of eight development blocks that are “of a variety of shapes and sizes to allow for the future development of light industrial warehouses and office uses, and includes the extensions of Clark Boulevard and Louis St. Laurent Avenue.”
It appears to be an office and warehouse-heavy planned subdivision, with the report saying it will have “13 buildings… [consisting] of a total of 291,662 square metres of industrial employment uses and 12,994 square metres of office employment uses.”
The subdivision is planned for Ward 3. myFM News reached out to Ward 3’s Regional Councillor Mike Cluett for a comment. He was unavailable; however, Town Councillor for Ward 2, John Challinor, commented on the subdivision when discussing the Council meeting. He is a big fan of the development.
In a previous article regarding development in the south-end of Milton, Councillor Mike Cluett had said that Ward 3 is primed for a significant boost in growth. He says the planned development for the area isn’t all just houses, and mentioned taller buildings – six, eight, twelve story-tall apartments and condo buildings.
Houses are still being planned though, as the third and final presentation at Milton’s Council meeting details. The 90-townhouse development is expected for “subject lands… known as 555 Bessborough Drive, on the east side of Tremaine Road, north of Louis St. Laurent Avenue.”
There was a lot of concern for these houses, primarily regarding parking. Town Councillors Challinor and Ali both agreed that parking is a major issue for the town and its residents. The developer had claimed that two spots will be available for the residents of these townhouses: their garage and their driveway, with a visitor parking lot also being available. Councillor Ali says she wants more options for residents. While two spots seems to be enough, that isn’t always the case.
She adds that it’s a marriage of responsibility between residents and the Town. Some residents use their garage as storage. Ali says that’s fine, but also, if you’re complaining about a lack of parking while doing so, you might need to reflect on how you can improve the situation on your part.
