Halton Women’s Place is trying to raise awareness for the abuse of women in our community.
November is Women Abuse Prevention Month.
The Manager of Development and Communications for the shelter, Carm Bozzo, says they want people to understand how serious the issue is for residents.
Bozzo says the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the shelter to shift things around. She says while they never close their doors and their chat-lines remain open, they have had to limit their capacity to about 50-60% to account for provincial regulations. HWP’s Community Outreach Councillors are also meeting with clients through Zoom.
Fundraising has also changed.
Along with raising awareness, Halton Women’s Place is selling purple-themed items to raise funds through its ‘Wrapped in Courage’ campaign.
Bozzo explains why they’re using purple.
Recently, the Halton Regional Police unveiled a new memorial for honouring intimate partner violence victims. It is in partnership with Halton Women’s Place, and honours and recognizes victims of intimate partner violence. It also aims to increase awareness of the impacts of intimate partner violence in our community. Read more here.
Bozzo says the relationship that Halton Women’s Place has with the Halton Police is vital for many reasons.
You can buy your purple-themed items here. Show your purple and show women that you support them by helping fund Halton Women’s Place.
There will be a flag raising in Milton at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6th at Milton’s Town Hall. It will be in honour of Women Abuse Prevention Month.
