Halton residents are reportedly receiving extortion letters in the mail.
The Halton Police says these letters are popping up around the Region.
“The HRPS has received multiple complaints about the same letter. This letter is typed on a computer and tells victims that a person in their life has hired the writer to harm them in some way. The writer offers to deny this request to harm them in exchange for a payment of Bitcoin from the victim. The suspect then promises to reveal the identity of the person who wants to harm them.”
The Halton Police adds that while the letters may seem convincing, are often tailored to someone in the home, and arrive by Canada Post – they are a scam.
If you receive one in the mail, report it to the police by contacting their non-emergency line at 905-825-4747.
An investigation is already underway to find the source of the letters.
