The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing its commercial motor vehicle inspection & enforcement blitz.
The inspections began yesterday morning at Woodbine Mohawk Park at 9430 Guelph Line in Milton (Campbellville), just off Highway 401.
Sergeant Ryan Snow says they’ll be using their authorities under the highway safety traffic act to get the trucks checked out.
This is an annual event. Last year, a total of 308 vehicles were inspected over a two-day period. 239 charges were laid and 99 trucks were taken out of service. That’s a 33% failure rate.
Any vehicles found to be unsafe will be taken off the road. Cargo and the corresponding administrative paperwork required to be carried by the drivers will be inspected. Light commercial vehicles such as small panel trucks, cube vans, and pick-up trucks with trailers will also be subject to this inspection.
Snow says the event helps keep the roads safe on a regular basis.
As for the everyday driver, a lot of Milton residents have complained about the speed of other motorists, especially on major roads. Snow believes that this speeding activity is due to the constant rapid growth of Milton, including a lot of the roads going from two to four-lanes. He says with that kind of growth, a trend has been found to occasionally happen with drivers where they suddenly feel the roads open up, and in turn, they can go faster.
More than 50 officers from across the GTA are in attendance at the commercial motor vehicle inspection blitz. Snow says that after the two-day blitz, they will continue to maintain truck enforcement in the area. He calls it a main artery for truck traffic with the 401 being so close.
