A Milton-based anti-bullying and social awareness campaign is now being offered online.
Nelson the Giant is a multi-layered program that uses storytelling, music, and creativity. It was created by Milton-resident Sandy Gemmill.
While the program has been used in schools across Halton and the GTA, children can now experience the story on YouTube.
The Nelson the Giant Youtube channel launched their new Thursday Thump Youtube-series.
It’s being hosted by Kate Pipe, a Child and Youth Councillor with the Halton Catholic District School Board.
Pipe provides a summary of Nelson the Giant.
She adds that as a mother of triplets, she has noticed all three of her kids finding lessons to be learned from Nelson the Giant.
One of the reasons for that is how engaging the presentation can be.
According to Pipe, during the presentation, the children are focused and engaged. Once that comes to an end, the music kicks in and provides another level for children to interact with. The drawing and colouring follows the music, stimulating a different part of their brain and hopefully keeping the lessons of anti-bullying and empathy around long-term.
Pipe shares what kind of feedback she’s received from the children she’s taught.
The teachers have mentioned that they enjoy being able to call back to the lessons thanks to provided posters and lesson plans. She says it’s those little things that help remind students that bullying someone is not right.
It’s not just the kids that do the learning. Pipe says the big thing that she has learned from the students since starting out with Nelson the Giant is that kids are inherently nice and good-natured.
