This summer, the COVID-19 pandemic may prevent people from visiting public beaches and crowded pools, but with access to rivers, lakes, oceans, and backyard pools, there will be plenty of people in, on, and around the water.
Public education on water safety and drowning prevention remain a high priority to keep people safe.
Velma Ganassini is a volunteer with the Red Cross.
She sends a clear message to the general public.
When it comes to differences in safety measures, Ganassini says that people should follow the Provincial guidelines of gatherings.
Sometimes the best advice is to always be aware of who’s in the water.
Public Health authorities will advise when it is safe to relax social and physical distancing requirements.
Make sure to follow updates from your local government, as the guidelines may differ from one province/territory to another.
