May is Sexual Assault Awareness month.
In some cases, survivors are being forced to isolate with their abuser due to COVID-19; SAVIS of Halton has seen an increase in calls.
At this time, all of their services have moved to a technical realm and SAVIS of Halton has been continuing their counseling via Zoom.
The executive director of SAVIS of Halton, Alma Arguello, doesn’t have the full numbers for April but she gives us an idea based on March.
She says that at this time they are seeing more young survivors seeking support. She reflects on their backlog
Those seeking counseling are finding themselves on 10-15 week-long waiting lists.
She encourages those who need to talk and those who are dealing with emergency cases to just call their helpline.
During this time, past volunteers for their helpline have been coming back to give their staff support in handling the influx of calls.
SAVIS of Halton has also been going to people’s homes to check on them.
Arguello gives us an overview of all they are doing this month.
We also spoke with Halton Women’s Place Executive Director, Diane Beaulieu, who shares how they will be acknowledging sexual assault awareness month.
If you or someone you love needs support, don’t hesitate to call the SAVIS of Halton helpline: 905-875-1555
