Earlier this year it was revealed that the founder of L’Arche community, Jean Vanier, had sexually abused six women.
This news has shocked many, especially the staff, students, and family of Milton’s Jean Vanier Secondary School.
Early in March, the Halton Catholic District School Board’s Trustees voted in favour of changing the name of the high school.
Milton Trustee for the school board, Marvin Duarte, explains the process of renaming a school.
With the feedback Duarte has received and knowing how upset it makes him whenever he drives past the school, he knows without a doubt that the name must be changed.
Duarte shares the response from the community.
The school board had counsellors in the school to help staff and students through this time.
Duarte says that the current naming policy for schools is under review to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
He shares a message for the L’Arche community and the community of Jean Vanier Secondary School.
