Milton Mayor Gord Krantz and MP Adam van Koeverden were in Ottawa recently to tell the federal government to say ‘no’ to the CN Intermodal Hub.
A press conference was held and the two were joined by other Halton delegates.
Mayor Krantz says it’s simple: just say ‘no’.
The CN Hub Review Panel released their summary several months ago.
In it, they said that while environmental and health risks exist with the planned hub, they would also exist with the Town’s planned development.
Mayor Krantz disagrees with that statement.
Mayor Krantz adds that he feels there is no plan b when it comes to the Hub.
The decision now comes down to the Minister of the Environment, Jonathan Wilkinson.
He and the cabinet can decide whether the Hub will be approved or not.
In a statement CN says they are committed to listening to the recommendations from the panel.
“Following an extensive environmental assessment, the independent Joint Review Panel appointed by the Government of Canada concluded that direct project effects on the environment, including effects related to air quality and human health, would be relatively small, that CN’s selection of the site in South Milton was supported by reasonable criteria, and that the Project has the potential to reduce greenhouse gases and other air pollutants at a regional and greater level, among other important benefits.” said CN in a statement.
CN is committed to addressing the recommendations made by the Joint Review Panel, and is taking measures to further reduce emissions such as deploying new electric trucks, which would serve the Project, if it is approved. The report is available here.
