Revisions to the Town’s Development Charges Rebate program were presented to and accepted by Milton’s Town Council during their council meeting on Monday night.
Council asked to be able to take another look during their last meeting in order to determine financial impacts this program would have in the future and to properly define who would qualify.
A 100% rebate was originally discussed.
However, Town Councillor for Ward 1, Kristina Tesser Derksen, says council will have to debate on the method they will use, such as a sliding scale, to determine how much of a rebate a business in need would get.
Councillor Tesser Derksen shares a point that Regional Councillor Zeeshan Hamid made.
Tesser Derksen explains that Milton can only help with the portion that the Town gets, the larger portion goes to the Region.
Council asked staff to take another look at it to determine if it was legal for the Town to offer the program, the financial impacts offering such a program could have going forward, and to properly define who would be eligible to receive a rebate.
There is talk that the program would give 100% rebate, but that is yet to be determined as they are still figuring out the formula for how they would pay businesses in need; businesses like Springridge Farms that are currently dealing with a development charge that is over $100,000.
