On December 4th, the Halton Police released a press release talking about the issue of intimate partner violence.
They shared that last year they had responded to 3300 calls.
Executive director of Halton Women’s Place, Diane Beaulieu, tells us how she feels about the move.
She adds that having the police as their partners reinforces that violence against women is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
Beaulieu talks about how sharing this information will benefit the community.
She talks also talks to us about their school program.
Any case the Halton Police shares with the public will not have the names or addresses of where the incident took place in them.
They will only outline what happened and what charges were laid.
Each statement will include messaging stating that no one has the right to abuse another person, encouraging witnesses and victims to report it to the police along with a list of resources for support.
Beaulieu explains that they will not release the name of the victim out of concern of re-victimizing them.
They will not share the identity of the perpetrator as doing so could add more to the case before it is seen in court.
