A group of grade 7 students from Guardian Angels Catholic Elementary School in Milton are striving to make a difference in our climate with community clean ups and spreading the word.
Ms.Francine Kelly showed Greta Thunberg’s speech to Swedish parliament to her students last year when they were in grade 6 and they were immediately inspired by her dedication to the cause at such a young age.
They formed Fridays for Future Milton, who meet every Friday and take out the green bins in all classrooms during recess and they organize monthly community clean ups through their Instagram account.
We asked student, Sofia Viliani , what made her want to join Fridays for Future Milton.
Classmate, Agostinho Goulart says he joined because of the corruption and pollution plastic use is causing.
Student, Marian Youlash talks about how Greta inspires her.
Classmate Rachel DaCunha says that Greta shows her that kids can have a voice and inspire change.
Student Rizkallah Botros has a message for kids.
Principal Chris Hawken says that the children’s work has inspired students of all ages to get involved.
Adding that this experience will be something these students will carry with them for the rest of their life.
Their teacher, Ms. Kelly, says her students have become stewards of the earth.
Guardian Angels with the help of the Fridays for Future team is working on becoming a gold certified EcoSchool.
They are off to a good start, as they already have water bottle refill stations that has brought their consumption of plastic water bottles down.
