
The Halton Police presented to Milton Town Council at their meeting on Monday night.
During that presentation, Chief Stephen Tanner, discussed a variety of different topics including mental health in the police force.
Chief Tanner says it is hard to give a number, but would hazard to guess 15-20 officers at any time could be dealing with a mental health issue
He gives an idea of how that could affect their budget.
Chief Tanner adds that they a police officer dealing with PTSD could be dealing with more stressers – saying that they are doing a lot more in the hiring process to educate incoming officers.
The Town of Milton has been conducting a survey on the possibility of opening a cannabis retail store.
Regional Councillor Mike Cluett, asked how the Halton Police or the community have been impacted.
Chief Tanner feels that the province should have decriminalized marijuana rather than legalizing it.
Councillor Rick Malbouef talked about the complaints he has received about speeding, aggressive driving and traffic.
He asked Chief Tanner about hiring more officers in Milton.
Chief Tanner says that their budget only allows them to hire 12-14 new officers.
Councillor Malbouef doesn’t believe that the level of police services in Milton matches their growth.
Chief Tanner says that they are wanting to expand, which would be easier if they moved out of the facility they’ve outgrown into a bigger one.
