Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton was at a YMCA in Toronto last Wednesday (sep 25) announcing a five-year freeze for non-profit organizations Workplace Safety and Insurance Board premiums.
He said he wasn’t going to allow the WSIB’s new rate frame work for every organization and business in Ontario drown the non-profits in premium rates.
McNaughton said he stepped in to ensure the non-profits, who typically operate on razor-thin budgets, be collateral damage.
The freeze helps near 2,700 organizations province wide, with premiums dropping to an additional 1,600 non-profits.
The estimated cost of lost WSIB premiums is $17 million. McNaughton said he was proud of the way the WSIB representatives worked with him to make this happen.
In addition, about 75 percent of employers will pay lower premium rates and 25 per cent will see increases, after a seperate move by McNaughton which eliminated the workplace insurance board’s long-standing unfunded liability.
